The Guardian has delved into its archives and found an article from November 1973 about the global fuel crisis that resulted from an Opec oil embargo. It is definitely worth a read: the article begins, “The [British] Government may be forced to introduce some form of weekend driving ban…” which Belgium and Holland had already introduced. Although most people would laugh at the thought now, with Europe potentially facing fuel shortages, it is not completely out of this world to conceive Western governments introducing such a law in the future. Just imagine, Oxford Street in London or Fifth Avenue in New York would be reduced to pedestrians and people on horseback – come to think of it, it doesn’t sound like too bad an idea!
